The Best Revenge is Being Yourself to the Core

You don’t have to kill in honor of the killed

I am an ardent preacher of harnessing and expressing one’s core self and authenticity. I’ve had to act like a chameleon innumerable times to fit in with different people from different stages of my life- and I can say it’s one of the most arduous things to do — to not be yourself and take a rest.

Inauthenticity isn’t always a personal choice, but more of a conferment of the “norm” by society. This is usually made up of our immediate family members and relatives who oftentimes project their notions on us based on their experiences without letting us be who we were organically created to be. Other times it’s made up of friends who pressure us (unknowingly) into believing and behaving a certain kind. Taking it further would-be with colleagues. For example, I had a friend who decided she’d be watching the news simply because her colleagues talked about the “6 o’clock news” at work.

Although this society's conferment of beliefs and behavior portrays more harm than good, it gives room for self-improvement — as in the case of my friend. But the harm meted can be detrimental to our self-esteem and development. Most likely due to the fact we deviate from choosing our path and following it unapologetically. Because you can create a niche for yourself and still be highly uncomfortable living in it.

Therefore, it begs to say that the harm society meets cripples us a lot and makes us resentful for not knowing any better. People tend to act out due to this with the belief that they’ve been defrauded — such as engaging in immoral acts; stealing, killing, and so on.

This is not the way to revenge on your old self. As this would translate to killing someone in honor of the killed ones.

The best way of showing your anger to the society that misled you in the first place is by being yourself — to the core.

Start doing things according to your inner regulatory clock- speak your truth and stick with it no matter what. Create rules that fit your personality, be kind to others be considerate of them, but never let anyone dictate how you love moving forward. This is the true act of bravery, sticking up for yourself, loving you, upholding your values, and creating your new normal — to exist in an ecosystem of love, peace of mind most importantly, and then joy.

Try being yourself. Make it the new culture.
