When someone offers you a compliment, says thank you in return for a favor or expresses one gesture or another to please you, it’s only normal to accept it because chances are, you deserve it.

Certain times when we refuse those gestures, offers, and pronunciations of gratitude, it’s mostly because we don’t have good self-esteem to believe we deserve those things and hence, the confidence to accept them.

It’s okay to respond with ‘you’re welcome’ when someone thanks you, it’s okay to feel proud of yourself when someone lets you know how much you affected their lives positively, it’s okay to smile in acceptance to the eulogies anyone showers you with. It’s okay to grin when someone admires your strength on something. It doesn’t make you ‘full of yourself’, you don’t have to assume that you’re being cocky just because of that or belittle your worth all in the name of modesty, in other words, self-deprecating.

Most times when we accept gratitude or other forms of compliments, it’s a reward for what we did, it’s you taking responsibility for having achieved the results and not reject that reward because you think that maybe it’s only magnifying your efforts to how you achieved the results.

That’s why there are awards, certificates, grants, and other forms of recognition, to prove and identify one’s efforts towards something they achieved, and to encourage them to do more and if possible, better. These forms of eulogies boosts self-esteem in return, and pumps in the confidence to reach out for more, and to accept the appreciation and stance that comes with it. Don’t back out of the latter after the former happens. It’s all part of the process.

So when someone offers you any form of gratitude, accept it wholeheartedly because that portrays you as someone who’s aware of the good works they did, someone with good self-esteem who believes that they got what they deserved and someone with the confidence to accept it — and is looking forward to doing more.
