Self-awareness means More than Just Being Aware

When you hear the word awareness, the first thing that comes to mind is being aware. How obvious, right? Awareness of your hair type or skin type, aware of what you like and dislike.

But sense of awareness surpasses mere comprehension of these things, even though they count.

Self-awareness encompasses those traits that are too embarrassing to acknowledge, those bad habits that are unsexy to admit to, and those mental models that are unhealthy and, hence, undeserving of your person.

Self-awareness defines the ability to tell yourself the bitter truth at times. The process of looking at yourself and admitting to your flaws rawly.

These types of awareness stem from a genuine quest for growth and maturity, not necessarily to put yourself down.

If you don’t know who you are, you won’t know how to live with you.

Self-awareness challenges our comfortable sides, questions like: how patient am I as a person to wish I were in someone else’s shoes who’s very patient and reaping the fruits? How envious can I become, and what does it teach me about my level of self-acceptance? Would I be as hospitable as I expect people to be for my loved ones or myself if roles were reversed? How do I treat myself to expect a level of respect or reciprocation of the said treatment from others?

These staunch self-awareness questions push you against the norm, but they promote a healthy dose of self-acceptance, self-knowledge, and self-love — which are key traits for personal growth and development if you don’t know who you are, you won’t know how to live with yourself.

Next time you’re tempted to pronounce how highly self-aware you are, remember it goes beyond what the color of your skin is or needs or what your choice of make-up item is based on your skin type. Remember, it encompasses asking the difficult questions and deriving their displeasing answers to balance your sense of self. Inculcating the knowledge in your everyday living is the true definition of growth.

Thanks for taking the time to read.
